I heard and read about the Late Vijay Tendulkar in mid-80s when he became a controversial figure with his play 'Ghasitram Kotwal'. The play was considered 'seditious' by the non-BJP rulers of India at that time, if I recall the facts correctly. But my reading of the complex, layered works of Mr Tendulkar, brings to my mind that reading plays is different from reading a novel for example. In line with the thoughts the existence of PREJUDICE, followed by ALIENATION and then the REJECTION leading to the climax is a need. In that format, and, with patience and a second reading I have found a well thought provoking writing that is now available to me - a non-Marathi learner of socio-political life of India. I am looking to see and read more about the Dalit literature so well spoken of but unavailable still in English or Hindi - that is my search for them have borne no fruits.
